Vietnam SHOCKs

Wearing helments when riding on a motorcycle became mandatory in December 2007 in Vietnam. However, many still take the law lightly as VND50.000 (USD2.50) would normally 'settle' the policemen. It is also common to see 3 or 4 people on one motorbike.

Less condense milk for my 'ca phe sua da' (ice coffee)  and no MSG for my 'pho' please!!!

The sacred giant turtle at the famous Hoan Kiem Lake has been returned after being treated for skin disease. That's good news so stop arguing about its sex!

A man urinates on the sidewalk in downtown Ho Chi Minh city
This is rather common in Vietnam. I see it almost everytime I go out on the streets (mostly man). I have seen only once where a woman in her old age took off her underpants and started doing her business on the street squating down. It was like a bad dream but I see it with my eyes.

The awareness of cleaniness and embarassment just isn't in some people's concious. You can see that the man in the above picture is doing on a busy street with cars and buses driving pass. He isn't afraid that someone is going to give him a fine or look strangely at him. It's his everyday habit! And sadly, he is not the only one. I bet some of the traffic police do that too!
